University of Toronto Mississauga

Science Building

The Science Building built at the University of Toronto Mississauga will transform the sciences by providing state-of-the-art research facilities. The building has 90,000 sq. ft. of lab space and houses the Centre for Medical Chemistry with labs supporting graduate life sciences programs, as well as the Forensic Science program.

The facility is part of an ambitious long-term commitment to cut the university’s carbon footprint to 37% below 1990 levels by 2030. To support this initiative, we supplied and installed over 9000 sq. ft. of painted laboratory furniture and fume hoods and nearly 2000 sq. ft. of stainless steel casework, fume hoods, and countertops by Mott Manufacturing. This consisted of more than 120 Optima™ Benches (with a variety of electrical and plumbing combinations), over 100 energy reducing NovaGuard™ high performance fume hoods, and hundreds of wall, tall, floor and specialty cabinets. Also supplied were four custom designed countertop ventilated glass enclosures which span twelve feet per unit that puts innovative research on display visitors and researchers alike.

This project required coordination across many overlapping trades and working through numerous unforeseen obstacles to deliver the world class building. The project began for mottLAB with estimating and bidding taking place during 2019, and although impacted by, has endured through COVID and many Ontario Union Worker strikes. This building projects to be a leading research facility for all of Canada, and mottLAB are thrilled to have played their part in providing the University with the furniture, fume hoods and equipment to reach their design initiatives.
